L’incontro con l’antico nella città di Lucca. Note e spunti di ricerca
Abstract ITA Il contributo analizza il reimpiego di materiali antichi a Lucca, prendendo in esame le testimonianze in situ e le fonti storico-artistiche che ne documentano l’uso nella ridefinizione dello spazio urbano. Particolare rilievo assumono i portali dei palazzi cittadini, nei quali la ripresa di motivi classici – armi, trofei e fregi – viene reinterpretata in chiave umanistica e rinascimentale. Lo studio mette in luce come tali soluzioni abbiano contribuito a definire un linguaggio di recupero dell’antico, inserito nel più ampio panorama delle pratiche architettoniche coeve in altri centri italiani, e come esse abbiano tradotto la memoria romana in segni di rappresentanza e identità civica tra Medioevo ed Età moderna.
Abstract ENG This paper examines the reuse of ancient materials in Lucca, drawing on in situ evidence and art-historical sources that document their role in redefining the urban fabric. Particular attention is given to the portals of the city’s palaces, where classical motifs – arms, trophies, and friezes – were reinterpreted in a Humanist and Renaissance key. The study highlights how these solutions contributed to shaping a language of recovery of antiquity, set within the broader panorama of contemporary architectural practices in other Italian centers, and how they transformed Roman memory into signs of civic identity and representation between the Middle Ages and the early modern era.
